WinFindr can find documents by content in Windows. Enter a word or phrase from a document, select the content search option and choose the file formats to search. You can search inside PDF files, Microsoft Word documents, EPUB ebooks, text and source code files, and OpenOffice documents.
How to search inside documents in Windows
To find files based on their content in Windows with WinFindr, you need to follow these steps:
- Open WinFindr. Download it now if you haven’t already.
- Enter a word or phrase you remember from the document, such as “invoice”.
- Control-Click on the “Files” checkbox to only search for files. (Optional step)
- Select “Look for files based on their content ...”
- Select the type of files you want to search for, for example “Search inside PDF documents” or “Search inside DOC documents”
- Click on the “Start” button to start the search.
- WinFindr will now search for all files based on their content and list them for you.

Search PDF, Word and other document formats
For PDF files, enable the PDF document option. For Word files, select the document format you want to search. Content search also supports Excel, PowerPoint and LibreOffice files. See the document search features for an overview.
Match text when you do not remember the exact spelling
You can combine content search with WinFindr’s natural language search options. For example, ignoring derived words and conjugations lets “invoice” match “invoicing”.
